World Heritage Site since 1995, Luang Prabang is one of the most attractive touristic destinations in Laos. This cute little town was built in the heart of a mountainous region, on a peninsula between the Mekong and the Nam Khan River. In spite of its many guesthouses, cafès and restaurants, Luang Prabang still gives off an authentic feel and is certainly worth going to for at least two days.
Get yummy pastries at Le Banneton and a good take-away coffee at Saffron Coffee to enjoy a nice French breakfast by the river. This isn’t the cheapest alternative, yet it’s certainly valid if noodles or rice are no longer your favorite morning options.
Go and check out Big Brother Mouse. You can spend a few hours there, in the mornings or afternoons, to give locals an opportunity to practice foreign languages. Otherwise, you can join their school, Big Sister Mouse, from 9 am to 3 pm to teach English to children aged between 3 and 13 years old.
Lose yourself in the tiny streets surrounding the night market and enjoy a Lao meal within an authentic and colorful setting. Walk along the main road and admire local handicrafts of all sorts, from traditional fabrics to bamboo smartphone speakers.
Go to Ock Pop Tock before 9 am and join one of their free tours to find out more about their artisan community and weaving culture. You can also sit on the beautiful terrace of their café, Silk Road, and admire Lao textiles while sipping a fresh fruit juice.
Rent a bicycle and pedal to Phosi Market. On the way back to town, climb up Phu Si Hill’s 329 steps to reach the top by 6 pm and admire the sun setting over the Mekong River. Although you may not be alone at that special hour, it’s still worth the effort.
Treat yourself with an outstanding yet still reasonably priced Lao dinner at Bamboo Tree restaurant. We had the best spring rolls and pumkin soup ever and slightly regretted not taking their cooking class.
Please note that the weather conditions weren’t on our side, for which we didn’t make the trip to the famous waterfalls of Kuang Si, highly recommended by many other travelers.
